Over the last few years TikTok has had a huge impact on how music is discovered and propelled a whole host of once-unknown artists to fame through viral trends to their songs.
Dame Un Grrr by Romanian producer Fantomel and singer Kate Linn has taken TikTok by storm this month and is yet another great example of how one short catchy soundbite can lead to a song going viral.
It all started when Fantomel and Linn teased a snippet at the end of May – several weeks before the full release – and since then there have been more than six million TikToks posted across multiple versions of the song.
How musicians are using TikTok to reach new audiences
The rise of TikTok has inspired a big shift in how artists and producers are building their audiences and releasing music. Many are posting short clips from their songs weeks – and sometimes months – before their full release in the hopes of going viral and in turn achieving chart success.
Kate Linn is a singer who's been popular in the Southeastern European and Middle Eastern music scene for several years and is now gaining international recognition after her collaboration with Fantomel.
Like other TikTok-savvy musicians, Fantomel and Linn have successfully capitalised on the power of TikTok and cleverly used the platform as a launchpad for their song by posting a series of TikToks to it – starting with this one which has now been viewed more than 50 million times.
How TikTokers are using Dame Un Grrr in their videos
Thousands of TikTokers are lipsyncing to the call-and-response chorus – usually in pairs with one person miming the "Dame un grrr" lyric and the other responding by doing a claw gesture.
One of the top TikToks on the sound is from Spanish footballer Dani Olmo – who's had more than 36 million views on his lipsync.
Some people are going a step further by adding transitions to their lipsyncs – switching into different hair, makeup and outfits like in this TikTok from influencer Gabby Morrison who says "This has been stuck in my head".
Pet owners have even found a way into the trend too with TikToks of dogs and cats showing their claws or teeth also getting a huge response.
This TikTok of a Japanese bobtail cat has had more than 150 million views – and comments suggesting "she won the trend".
