Florida-based content creator Gabriel Rivera has turned ordering food from home cooks on Facebook Marketplace into one of the most uplifting social media trends of the moment.
He's posted a series of more than 50 videos on his social media channels showing him picking up a variety of home-cooked meals he's ordered on Facebook Marketplace and the reaction of the sellers who've made them.
The videos have racked up 900 million views across TikTok, Instagram and Facebook since he started the series in late March.
In each of the videos he places an order, collects it, chats briefly to the cook and gives his verdict. Many of the home cooks say they set up their accounts as they were struggling to make their way in the food industry – and some of them are saying he's transformed their fortunes as his viewers start placing their own orders with them.
Geechee Goddess says Gabriel saved her life and her family
One of the greatest success stories is Geechee Goddess, a South Carolina cook who says her life changed after Gabriel posted about her food.
He ordered a $200 seafood boil from her and posted a review on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook which has now reached nearly 300 million people. Gabriel called it "the best seafood boil I've ever had" and promised that "I'm a million percent coming back."
Soon after, Gabriel returned and filmed her talking about what had happened since the first video went live. She told him: "You saved my life. You saved my family, my children." She said she made $5,000 in just two days and had customers travelling from Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland to order what people were now calling "the Gabriel special".
That TikTok got comments like:
"The power of social media is INSANE"
"THIS is what social media is for 😭"
"This is what a real influencer looks like. A true influencer is someone who uses their voice and platform to uplift others✨ especially small business owners who work hard every day to make a living. By supporting local businesses and helping them reach a wider audience, they create meaningful opportunities and contribute to the success of many families. Their influence is not measured by the number of followers they have, but by the positive impact they make in people’s lives ❤️"
"Just proves that sometimes people just need an opportunity, her food is the same as it was 2 weeks ago, but nobody knew about her. Keep working people, your opportunity will come"
Geechee Goddess had been through a difficult period in her life prior to starting her business on Facebook Marketplace. She says she left a job where she faced harassment, bullying and a toxic environment that damaged her mental health and, after quitting, returned to what she knew: cooking and selling food online to get by.
Business was slow until Gabriel came along. She said: "My life has completely changed." She talks about finally feeling seen after so many years, and about wanting her story to be a message to other people not to give up.
Other home cooks are also seeing a boost thanks to Gabriel's videos
Geechee Goddess isn't the only home cook to benefit from the attention that Gabriel Rivera's reviews can bring.
In one of the early viral videos in his series – which has had 40 million views across his social channels – he ordered fufu with egusi and beef from M&M Cuisine-Mel's Kitchen in Savannah in Georgia.
He said: "I'm not gonna lie, this is really good. It has a slight kick to it, which I didn't expect. Honestly, I had no expectations because I've never tried this before. It has very deep, savoury flavours and after those flavours settle, you get that little kick."
Just a few of the comments on this video:
"Okay normally I don’t get ordering food from Facebook, but I would trust this lady"
"The fact that you went to her instead of a restaurant for your first experience will have you finding nowhere that compares to the authenticity of homemade. So good 💗"
"I'm literally crying. For soooo many of our cultures, our food is our love language. She looked so happy for you to try it."
"You literally have come across the best people. Absolutely love this whole series!"
"Because of this series I started browsing my Facebook marketplace"
"Am I about to order lunch off FB marketplace tomorrow? Yes I am."
The business owner commented on his Instagram reel: "Thank you all for your likes and lovely comments it means a lot to me! I do this every weekend, preorders are highly recommended."
In a more recent video, Gabriel ordered a $130 chicken wing boil from Shaye's Wings in Orlando. The comments on this video show how his endorsement is quickly translating into real interest from potential customers:
"The TikTok algorithm doing its thing! I’m in Orlando and I will definitely give her some business. This all looks amazing!"
"She’s in Orlando 🥰🥰🥰 I’m gonna check her out"
"Good gawd this looks amazing! AND she’s in Orlando?! Lemme place an order"
Others who already knew of Shaye's Wings backed up Gabriel's review, describing the food as some of the best in Orlando:
"As a long time customer of hers, she is literally the sweetest human being ever and the wings slap every 👏 single 👏 time 👏"
"BEST WINGS IN ORLANDO!!"
"The food is AMAZING!! I order all the time from her!!!!!"
"OMG I love her I tried her food at a pop up they were the best wings I’ve ever had"
More content creators try home-cooked food from Facebook Marketplace
As Gabriel's videos grow in popularity, they're inspiring other content creators across the world to post their own videos of them picking up food they've ordered from Facebook Marketplace.
This TikTok of someone in Baltimore collecting a fried cheeseburger taco – the seller's first ever order – has had seven million views.
UK-based American content creator Kalani Ghost Hunter, who has more than five million followers on social media, was really impressed by the soul food order he placed on Facebook Marketplace.
He said: "We might have to order from Facebook Marketplace more often. This is awesome. It's a great idea."
