If you're active on social media, especially TikTok and Instagram, you'll have probably seen the overnight oats trend at some point over the last year – the hashtag on TikTok has had almost 500 million views now. It involves mixing porridge oats and milk in a plastic tub or bowl, placing a layer of yogurt over them, adding a topping of your choice, and chilling it all in the fridge ready and waiting for when you wake up in the morning.
Now there's a twist: swapping oats for Weetabix to create a cheesecake-like treat. On TikTok the hashtag has had 21m views and counting, and, just like overnight oats, people are loving how versatile it is. You can be super creative in changing the flavours and toppings to suit your tastes, with everything from raspberries and dark chocolate, to apple pie, salted caramel, tiramisu and, my personal favourite, cookies and cream. People who are into fitness are making "healthy" versions too, with plant-based milks and a sprinkle of protein powder to give them an extra boost to start the day.
Gareth Turner, Head of Brand at Weetabix, is pleased with how the trend has taken off. Quoted in Grocery Trader, he said: "Here at Weetabix we are always encouraging people to eat their Weetabix in different ways, so we've been thrilled to see TikTok users creating such delicious and innovative recipes. With many getting involved, we'd encourage retailers to ensure they are well stocked with Weetabix".
Social media is filled with so many different flavour combinations and toppings for Overnight Oats and Overnight Weetabix, so I've been using Shooglebox to squirrel away recipes that catch my eye as and when I spot them in my feeds. Seeing a visual library of recipes in front of me inspires me when I'm not quite sure what to have for breakfast:
