Tom Odell's hit single "Another Love", which reached the UK top 10 in 2013, has taken on a new meaning over the last few days in the context of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainians are using the song in TikTok videos to share footage of what their homeland used to be like before the conflict and of soldiers leaving their loved ones to fight.
The version being used on TikTok is a haunting live recording where the crowd sing the verse: "I wanna kiss you, make you feel alright. I'm just so tired to share my nights. I wanna cry and I wanna love, but all my tears have been used up." This choir-like recording was originally used by @unstablekido last November before the military conflict began, but now most videos using the sound are about Ukraine.
Duetting a video by @alina__volik, who's longing for a return to the Kyiv she used to enjoy with her friends, Tom Odell said: "I am humbled and honoured so many Ukrainian people are using my song to make videos like this. Long live Ukraine. I shall come and we shall sing it together soon."
Tom himself has fond memories of concerts in the Ukrainian capital, saying in a duet video with @rinakosh20: "I've played in Kyiv many times. It is a wonderful city, full of wonderful people. This is devastating. Sending all the love in my heart to the people of Ukraine." Ukrainian fans might remember him performing at the country's biggest musical festival, Atlas Weekend, at the Expocenter in July 2019, alongside the likes of Liam Gallagher, The Chainsmokers and Black Eyed Peas, as well as his own gigs at the Stereo Plaza night club in February 2019 and March 2017.
"Another Love" has also been used by people sharing footage of solidarity protests in major cities across the world like Chicago, London and Toronto. @misstatiz, for example, is a Ukrainian living in Chicago – she's campaigning for the United States to accept refugees and is encouraging her followers to sign this petition.
@alonacanada is a Ukrainian based in Toronto, where she says more than 25,000 people turned up at a demonstration to show their support for Ukraine:
