AI gone wrong: TikTok users in stitches over microwave filter trend

Posted on 28th February 2025

The spinning microwave filter has taken over TikTok these past few weeks with more than four million people using it and laughing at the often bizarre results.

The CapCut template, created at the start of February, takes a still image and uses AI to make the subject rotate as if it's spinning in a microwave – whether that be a pet, human or random everyday object.

People are amused by the hilarious results of wonky AI interpretations – and joking that "This filter is too much". We've pulled together a Shooglebox containing some of the funniest videos all in one place:

One of the top videos on the trend, with more than 25 million views, shows a bull terrier spinning with just two legs and no actual body:

Another pet owner joked about being "horrified" by the way AI gave her pitbull a human face and hands:

Often there are objects in the background that the AI tool is confused by – like the door wreath in this couple's video which AI thinks is the lady's hair:

AI CapCut templates and filters go viral on TikTok all the time and, just like the microwave one, often throw out funny unexpected results – like a new balloon filter giving a cocker spaniel a human hairstyle in this video, and this AI hugging video where a cat is confused for a person.
