The Untamed cat food brand have been quick to post a funny response to a TikTok about a customer who cancelled her subscription and told them it was because her cat had died – when it was actually because he didn't like the food but she didn't want to sound rude.
The Untamed team had sent the customer some flowers in the post with a "We're so sorry for your loss" note.
The cat, Scooter, was actually alive and well. The customer sent a text to her daughter saying "I should have said he didn't like the food but that seemed a bit rude so I just thought it was easier to say he was dead."
The TikTok was posted on the "Sometimes you have to ignore a text" trend where people share screengrabs of funny text messages they've received from their mums or other family members.
It's gone viral with four million views and comments saying it's actually quite good publicity for the brand:
"That’s actually so nice of them 🥲"
"Good advert for them, shows how nice of a company they are 💀"
"This is so funny from your mum and so lovely from the cat food company, l hope if they see this tiktok they don’t mind bc still good publicity for them, I’ve never heard of Untamed before but will defo check them out if this is how they treat customers!"
"Oh what a lovely company 😭❤️"
"Honestly though, kudos to the Untamed 🥹❤️"
"You’ve just made me go and sign up to untamed, thank you"
"Ok I'm switching to untamed, that's actually quite lovely"
"Untamed are great and we’ve used them from when they were quite a small business and always have excellent customer service"
Untamed then responded with their own TikTok joking about their "employees working hard to fulfil flower orders for fake dead cats" while their social media team celebrate the brand going viral.
Untamed's video is getting a great response from people who've seen the original TikTok and understand the joke:
"I love that the algorithm brought me from the original post to this"
"Not me coming straight from the scooter video 👀🤣🤣"
"this is actually hilarious 😭"
"Oh I love that my fyp brought me back here! Shout out to you guys - my mums cat mochi has a super sensitive stomach and your food is one of the few (affordable) brands that doesn’t make him sick! 💖"
"Love a TikTok full circle moment 🤗"
"Omg your social media person deserves a raise 😂😂"
"This reactive marketing to your own content is amazing 👏👏"
"This is how you win social media 🤣🤣🤣🤣"
"I love the fact that you guys have an awesome sense of humor. I might have to switch my cats food 😂"
"This is honestly the nicest thing a company could do!!!! And I know she feels mortified that you guys know hahahaha awww I feel bad she felt awkward and didn’t want to be rude but then picked the wrong choice 😂😭"
It's a great example of the importance of listening to conversations around your brand on social media – and being quick to jump on opportunities.
